The «Fashion Association» has announced the launch of the «Geographical Indications for Traditional Fashion» initiative, aimed at protecting and documenting local attire, linking it to its regions of origin, and granting it an official legal and cultural identity. The initiative seeks to register Saudi traditional dress as geographical indications to safeguard them from extinction, empower artisans and designers to benefit from them, and strengthen their presence both locally and globally.
Association President «Lulwa Al-Shaqhaa» stated that the initiative comes in preparation for major upcoming events such as «Expo 2030» and the «2034 FIFA World Cup», emphasizing that designers certified under this seal will gain high credibility in local and international markets.
She added that the first phase included a study of local and international standards, the development of a comprehensive guidelines manual, reference models, and an evaluation mechanism. The next steps will involve assessing candidate garments from across Saudi regions, documenting them on the ground, launching awareness workshops for artisans and designers, preparing official registration files, and producing visual content to promote the initiative.
